David Harbour Finally Speaks Out on Lily Allen’s “Weird” Breakup Album Amid Infidelity Rumours
David Harbour has broken his silence regarding his ex-wife Lily Allen’s new music, specifically her critically acclaimed breakup album, West End Girl. Following their split, which separated them in late 2024 and was officially confirmed in February 2025, the Stranger Things actor is now addressing the raw and controversial lyrics that paint a less-than-flattering picture of the end of their marriage.
The split between the two stars has reportedly been anything but amicable. Lily Allen channelled her emotions into West End Girl, an album that tackles themes of emotional manipulation and alleged infidelity. However, Harbour has dismissed the narrative spun in her songs, bluntly calling the album “weird” and firmly stating, “It wasn’t my experience.”
Speaking candidly to Variety, Harbour addressed the situation with a mix of respect and clear boundaries. “‘It was weird,” he admitted. “I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that. I can’t really say that much more, because it’s my private life.”
He elaborated on his desire to keep personal matters out of the spotlight, a challenging feat given their high-profile relationship. “In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that. Stories are complex, and that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience.”
While Allen has acknowledged that the lyrics blend “fact and fiction,” cautioning fans against taking them literally, the theatricality of her recent performances suggests a deeply personal vendetta. In March, during a performance of her track “4Chan Stan,” Allen made a bold and provocative statement. As she sang about discovering a partner’s infidelity, she unveiled a dress constructed entirely from receipts—allegedly for items her ex-partner bought for other women.
The song’s lyrics leave little to the imagination: “Never been Bergdorf’s, but you took someone shopping there on May 24. You bought her a handbag. It wasn’t cheap. I was in London. Probably asleep.” The receipt dress notably included slips from tequila bars and the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman, directly referencing the lyrics and adding a stinging layer of reality to the performance art.
The couple’s romance began on the exclusive dating app Raya, leading to a Las Vegas wedding in 2020. Just four years later, they parted ways amid swirling allegations of infidelity. Since the split, Allen has moved on, confirming her relationship with Jonah Freud. The pair, who have a 12-year age gap, were recently seen enjoying a romantic getaway in Rome.
Harbour’s response highlights the inherent tension between public artistry and private reality. While he defends her right to creative expression, he refuses to validate her version of events as his own, choosing instead to protect the privacy of his personal life against the backdrop of a very public and musical autopsy of their marriage.
