Ben Fogle Reveals He Was Caught ‘Completely Off-Guard’ by Mental Breakdown That Left Him With Nausea, Crippling Anxiety and Paranoia

Beloved TV adventurer Ben Fogle has opened up about the moment his carefully balanced world suddenly collapsed — admitting he was left “completely off-guard” by a devastating mental breakdown that triggered nausea, crippling anxiety and paranoia.

The 51-year-old wildlife presenter, best known for his rugged expeditions and calm authority on screen, has revealed that his breakdown in 2023 came without warning — and hit harder than anything he had experienced before.

Despite a career built on surviving extreme conditions, remote landscapes and high-risk adventures, Ben says nothing prepared him for the internal storm that followed.

 “It Was a Complete Breakdown”

Speaking candidly in a new interview, Ben described the terrifying physical and psychological toll the episode took on him.

The symptoms were so overwhelming that even everyday life became difficult — a stark contrast to the fearless image viewers have long associated with the former Castaway star, who shot to fame on the BBC back in 2000.

What made it more frightening, Ben says, was how unexpected it all felt.

“I’ve always known that after big, high-adrenaline expeditions I can feel low,” he explained. “But this one came out of nowhere. It really caught me off-guard.”

A Warning to Men Who Bottle It Up

Now on the other side of the crisis, Ben says he felt compelled to speak out — particularly for young men who feel pressure to stay silent about their mental health.

“I’m better now,” he said. “But I felt it was important to share this. Young men in particular tend to bottle things up. There’s no need for shame or stigma — it’s just part of being human.”

His honesty has already sparked a wave of support from fans, many of whom admitted they were shocked that someone who appears so resilient could be brought to his knees by anxiety and depression.

A Later ADHD Diagnosis Changed Everything

In 2024, Ben received another life-altering revelation: he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

At the time, he shared the news with fans on Instagram, admitting that “some aspects of life had become a struggle” and that he felt he had “changed neurologically.”

Already dyslexic, Ben said the diagnosis didn’t define him — but it did help explain years of internal battles he hadn’t fully understood.

“I hate labels,” he wrote. “The idea that a single word defines us is too binary. We are more than that.”

He added: “I have ADHD, but I am still me. It doesn’t make me fragile — just vulnerable.”

Family, Routine and the Quiet Fight Back

Ben shares two children — Ludo, 16, and Iona, 14 — with his wife Marina, whom he married in 2006. While Marina largely stays out of the limelight, Ben has previously credited his family with helping ground him during his darkest moments.

After the breakdown, routine became essential. The man who once thrived on chaos and exploration had to relearn how to slow down.

“I’m not very good at stillness,” he has admitted in the past. “But I’ve had to learn it.”

 An Unexpected Lifeline: Saunas

One of the most surprising tools in Ben’s recovery came in the form of something deceptively simple: saunas.

Last year, he revealed that regular sauna use became “my medicine” after his mental health crisis — helping him regain calm, clarity and balance.

Writing for The Times, Ben described how saunas — from Sweden and Russia to Antarctica and even the Chernobyl exclusion zone — had long been part of his travels. But after his breakdown, they took on a deeper meaning.

“They brought me tremendous healing and happiness,” he said.

 A Different Kind of Strength

Today, Ben Fogle remains a familiar face on British television — but behind the smile is a man who has faced a very different kind of survival challenge.

Not against nature.
Not against the elements.
But against his own mind.

And by choosing to speak openly, he’s proving that real strength isn’t about enduring in silence — it’s about being brave enough to admit when you’re not okay.
