From TV Stardom to Total Ruin: Andrea McLean Reveals The Heartbreaking Truth Behind Her Financial and Health Collapse

When Andrea McLean made the shocking decision to leave her 13-year stint on Loose Women back in November 2020, fans were left reeling. The beloved presenter confidently assured viewers that she was destined for greater things, leaving the hit ITV show to focus on her fledgling wellness, retail, and life-coaching platform, This Girl is on Fire. It seemed like a bold, empowering move for the star.

But behind the brave face and ambitious plans, the reality was a slow-motion disaster that would soon spiral completely out of her control. Fast forward to 2026, and the 56-year-old former presenter is bravely speaking out about a harrowing journey of financial collapse, a near-death health scare, and the excruciating shame of losing it all.

The Collapse of a Dream

Andrea’s business venture, the one she had pinned her hopes and her future on, failed catastrophically. The fallout was devastating, leaving her with hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt. In a heartbreaking confession, she revealed the stark reality of her situation.

“My personal experience right now is of excruciating shame, as a result of financial ruin,” Andrea admitted candidly. The financial black hole she found herself in was absolute. “I lost my home, my pension, all my savings. We maxed out credit cards, there was so little in my bank account, it was minus.”

The situation became so dire that Andrea was forced into desperate measures just to survive day-to-day. The woman who had been a fixture in millions of living rooms across the nation was suddenly selling off her furniture to pay for basic groceries, with bailiffs knocking at her door.

The Stigma of Starting Over

In her desperate search for income, Andrea turned to online job boards, applying for roles far removed from her glamorous television career. She applied for positions in coffee shops, clothes shops, and basic office work, but the response was silence.

“I’ve never been on Tinder, but I assume it was like being on Tinder and nobody swiped right for me. It was literally, nobody cares. I didn’t even get a response,” she recalled, highlighting the harsh reality of trying to rebuild a life when you are seen as ‘past your prime’ by potential employers.

The rejection stung deeply, especially after a brutal meeting with investors regarding her failing business. “They told me that my ‘star had faded’,” Andrea shared. “Nobody was interested anymore. It’s hideous, a horrible feeling. You are still you, a person with a heart and feelings and everything else, but you realise that your worth is not tied up in what your capabilities are. Your worth is tied up in what your currency is seen to be.”

This painful realisation drove home a societal truth for Andrea. She questioned why people are so quick to judge those who have fallen on hard times, asking, “Why is it okay to do it because someone who had a different job is now running a burger van?”

A Brush with Death

Just as she was trying to keep her head above water by starting a media coaching company, life dealt Andrea another devastating blow. At the end of 2024, she suffered a severe health crisis that nearly cost her her life.

Feeling incredibly unwell over the Christmas and New Year period, Andrea collapsed in her bathroom. She only managed to summon help by shouting at her phone to alert her husband, who was downstairs.

The diagnosis was terrifying: pneumonia, sepsis, and kidney failure. “We were told by the doctors that if I’d waited another day, I’d have died,” Andrea revealed. “By that point my wee was brown and that is a sign that your kidneys are shutting down. We felt we hit rock bottom and then we didn’t realise that rock bottom has a trap door and you can still keep falling through it.”

Letting Go of the Dream Home

To manage her mounting debts and find a way forward, Andrea had to make the agonising decision to sell her beloved £1 million home in Surrey and move into rented accommodation. This house was more than just bricks and mortar; it was her sanctuary.

“I loved that house,” she said. “It was the home that I bought when I got divorced. It was my safe space. It was mine.” Andrea had poured her heart into the property, even studying garden design at an agricultural college to create a beautiful outdoor space.

Despite the heartbreak of leaving it behind just as the roses were beginning to join over the door, Andrea’s resilience shone through. “I very quickly went into practical mode. Aren’t I lucky that I have a house I can sell? Aren’t I lucky that I can do this? It’s fine. I’ll get another house.”

Finding Strength in Love

Through all the financial devastation, the crushing shame, and the terrifying health scare, one thing has remained a constant source of strength for Andrea: her third husband, Nick Feeney.

Andrea, who has been married to the life coach since 2017, admits that her previous marital breakdowns left her shattered. “When my last two marriages ended, there was a lot of laying on the floor and crying,” she confessed. Before meeting Nick, she had given up on love entirely, planning to just “focus on my garden.”

But fate had other plans, and the adversity they have faced together has only solidified their bond. Andrea says of Nick, “Actually I have ended up with someone who is my best friend… that is love. We sit in silence at night time and send each other funny memes on our phone. That is literally our love language.”

She marvels at their ability to weather the storm together. “We’re still together throughout it all. We’re still friends. We still love each other and I don’t know many couples who could come through what we’ve been through.” The experience has taught them to cherish the simple things, like walking the dog on the beach, proving that true wealth isn’t found in a bank account.

Breaking the Taboo

Now, Andrea is determined to use her painful experiences to help others by addressing the shame that often accompanies failure and financial ruin. She has documented her journey in a new book, Shameless: Finding Freedom and Resilience Through Failure.

She points out that money remains a massive taboo in society. “We’d rather talk about anything else than actually discuss what is in our bank account,” she noted. She admitted to hiding her struggles, even pretending she had already had a coffee just to avoid admitting she couldn’t afford one.

After a lifetime of carrying shame—whether over her marriages, discussing the menopause, or her highly publicised business failure—Andrea is finally breaking free. “I lost everything, my health, my home. But I’ve come out the other side.”

Her message is one of unyielding resilience. “I will always just keep going. Always… People may say, ‘Oh, for God’s sake, that’s just that woman off the telly. What does she know about hardship?’ but I can truly say, I do.”
